Monte Carlo

During the first week of June, D had a conference in Monte Carlo and I tagged along. Tough duty, but somebody's got to do it! We flew into Nice, where we parked next to Lance Armstrong's plane:He was in Nice to train for the upcoming Tour de France. We knew Lance would be flying out that day so we looked for him at the airport. Alas, we only saw his plane. We then rented a car and drove the short distance from Nice to Monaco. We were stopped along the way to allow French President Sarkosy's motorcade to pass -- he was in Nice for a summit with African nation presidents. (So...does it count as celebrity spotting when you see their means of transport, but not them? No?) Monte Carlo is gorgeous. While D worked, I hung out a the pool... visited the beach... and toured. The Prince's Palace of Monaco, atop a hill, was lovely and gave me an opportunity to watch their changing of the guard. But it wasn't all work for D! When we visited Monte Carlo last year, we only saw the exterior of it's famous casino (think James Bond in GoldenEye and Casino Royale). Ths time, since the conference hotel was located adjacent to the casino, we went in. We gambled a little (neither of us inherited the gambling gene from our parents) and actually came out 11 Euros ahead. Woo Hoo! But the really fun part was watching the high-stakes people gamble. One guy, who happened to be American, was betting $10,000 per HAND in blackjack. For hours. Judging from his massive, diamond-encrusted Rolex, he must win a lot. Well, we may not be lucky in gambling, but we're lucky in love!
