What Volcanic Ash Cloud?

This morning, we saw the first airplanes in the sky above us. It had been 6 days since any flights had taken off or landed in London, due to the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland. We have friends who are stuck in far away places who want to be here and friends who are here and are desperate to be somewhere else. We're hopeful that with the resumption of flights, some of them will get to where they want or need to be soon. Ironically, we've had 6 days of crystal clear skies and perfect Spring weather; you would never know from being here that there was an ash cloud overhead. We were in Windsor on Saturday; Windsor is only 5 miles from Heathrow and directly under the flight path for planes to/from one of the busiest international airports in the world. Usually the low flying planes overhead are a distraction. Here is a photo we took looking from Windsor Great Park directly towards Heathrow Airport (you might even be able to see the airport Control Tower in the center): No planes. No contrails. No noise. Peaceful -- if you're not stuck in airport chaos hell. And D's business is entirely aviation-based. No planes = no services = no revenue. That's a big hit. Needless to say, he was very relieved this morning to see that planes are once again flying. Happy trails, indeed.
