Meeting My Parents in Belgium

My Mom & Dad have just taken a river cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium to see the spring flowers -- the Dutch tulips, in particular. They loved the cruise, and were blessed with great weather from start to finish. Their last day, yesterday, was a free day in Antwerp, Belgium. D and I hopped on a train to Brussels on Thursday night, spent the night at Don & Cathy's, then the 4 of us did the short train trip yesterday morning to Antwerp to see my parents. We met them at their cruise boat: where we had a cocktail in the boat's sunny lounge before heading to a fantastic local restaurant for lunch. The boat's lounge is also where I finally got my well-earned $10 from Dad -- his share of my winnings from our 7-player NCAA Basketball Tournament Pool! Don & Cathy picked a wonderful lunch place -- excellent food, lovely decor, and friendly owners who bent over backwards to make us comfortable. From there we walked to an Antwerp institution -- the Kulminator beer bar. Don did a great job selecting Belgian beers according to everyone's preferences. It was a wonderful day. Mom & Dad headed back to their boat to pack, while Don, Cathy, D and I caught a train back to Brussels. Now...what do you suppose it was that made these two busy professionals on the train: completely lose their concentration, forget all about their work, and ditch their Blackberries for a few moments? The train voyage between Brussels and Antwerp takes you right through Brussels' red light district. So they were checking out this: Wow! Call girls in every ground-floor window for several blocks. It's no wonder they were distracted! When we got back to Brussels, we took a quick walk. Did you know that Brussels was the home of the surrealist artist Rene Magritte? I took this photo of the reflection of a Brussels church in a mirror shaped like Magritte's famous "Son of Man" profile:D and I then soon caught a return train to London. Mom & Dad are now on their way back to the US, and Don and Cathy are undoubtedly recovering from the whirlwind that is our family. But what a great day it was!
