When our friend Doug heard that Charlotte was going to be making a 3-day stop here near the end of her 6-month tour of Europe, he said that he couldn't wait to get a report on the effects of "Hurricane Charlotte" on London. I can report that her visit was more like a Tropical Storm -- lots of energy and enthusiasm, but no serious damage left behind! Charlotte has spent the last 5+ months traveling in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria. She's found inspiration for her work (she is a professional artist) and a renewed confidence in her abilities. Along the way, she's also found the world's best chocolate cake and a gorgeous leather bag from Morocco that I tried very hard to steal while she was here! She told us that she wanted to see "what makes England 'England'", so she and I spent one day exploring the coast and the rural Downs,

one long day exploring the city,

and one day in our little market town of Horsham.

She ate fish & chips with mushy peas, drank English ale, and embraced the full English experience. We even managed to stumble across an enormous film crew shooting at Beachy Head -- and we just missed seeing the Oscar award-winning actress Helen Mirren! (The film is a remake of the 1940's film "Brighton Rocks", and we were told that there is a pivotal scene at the chalk cliffs. We had to laugh when we passed an actor walking along the beach covered in gory makeup and wearing trousers with one leg torn off, followed by this prop guy:

carrying a realistic looking severed leg!) The day in London was a blast -- we walked for miles, overloading on the myriad sights and sounds of the city. My favorite part of the visit was touring the Tate Modern art museum with Charlotte. It had been more than 15 years since I'd been in an art museum with her, and I'd forgotten how very cool it is to see modern art with someone who knows it, understands it, has historical context for it, and loves to share knowledge with others. I walked away with a new appreciation. Charlotte left this morning -- next stop, Belgium!
