Liverpool

On our way back from the Lake District, we stopped and spent one night in Liverpool. Neither of us had ever been there before, and we thought it would be a fun stopping point on the long drive home. It was! Liverpool reminded me of Baltimore -- port cities that thrived in the 18th & 19th Centuries, fell on hard times in the early 20th Century, then made a big investment to revitalize and reinvent themselves in the late 20th Century. The two cities embarked on similar efforts to bring business and commerce back to their harbour areas; in fact, Liverpool's Albert Dock reminded us very much of Baltimore's Inner Harbor/Harborplace.While we were in Liverpool we visited several museums, including the Maritime Museum with it's exhibitions on the Lusitania and Titantic; the International Slavery Museum, where we learned about Britain's role in funding the slave trade in the 1700's; and the Beatles Museum, which we found disappointing but we had to do it when in Liverpool, right? We also took a fun tour of Liverpool's famous Anfield football stadium. Here's D, imitating legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly's pose:As you might imagine, D was thrilled to be at the club. We got to go out onto the pitch... and into the players' very spartan changing room, where we posed with the kits of our favorite Liverpool players. We haven't changed our team allegiances to Liverpool, but we might cheer for them a little in the future!

Hey, that looks familiar. Isn't Liverpool a great city? I didn't get into any museums while I was there, but really enjoyed walking around the city.

Jason: On your next visit to Liverpool or Manchester, you MUST make a detour visit to the Lake District. It's tailor-made for you and your mountain bike! We thought of you and Jackie often while we were there. And yes, Liverpool was great -- at least the parts we saw -- it felt a lot like home to me! A.
