Visit to Maryland

It was a thoroughly wonderful trip home last week, although unfortunately D was busy at work and was unable to join me. The week of festivities began on Saturday with my nephew's First Communion; I've already posted photos from that special ceremony. What I didn't mention was that it was also a celebration of his 8th birthday -- so there were two parties in one! He read his cards aloud......to a captivated audience......and he got some cool gifts! Later in the week I had fun watching his older brother play Little League baseball. M has developed a nice eye, a solid swing... ...and an aggressive base-running technique. He was half of a successful double steal on this play: His team won 11-6, and he had a couple of RBIs. Way to go!During the week, I had lots of time with extended family and quite a few opportunities to get together with old friends. I loved seeing everyone -- thanks to all! I also managed to swing by our house in Annapolis to see the irises in bloom near the front door -- a springtime favorite of mine. After a fun 6 nights at Steve & Maria's, I moved over to my parents' house in Baltimore for the last two nights of my stay. Mom & Dad had just gotten back that week from their annual winter in Florida. After accompanying Dad to an appointment at Johns Hopkins, he and I stopped in Baltimore's famous Corned Beef Row for lunch -- oh, how we miss good deli food in England!Mom and I did some shopping in Towson, and she drove me past the house I grew up in. The azaleas were beautiful as always, but overall the gardens looked a lot nicer back when she was tending them!On Friday night, the three of us tried to go out for a seafood dinner. We hadn't realized that the Preakness Parade was traversing the same route we needed to take...and after a circuitous detour and an hour spent trying to get to the restaurant (only one mile away!), we just stopped the car and ate at the nearest place we could find. The ride home was just as meandering and full of detours; here's what it looked like to me, complete with red lights and bumper-to-bumper traffic! Dad deserved that drink after we finally made it home. On my final day in the US, Maria and her youngest joined us for a crab lunch at Bo Brooks -- yum! A good time was had by all!
