The Queen's Birthday

Yesterday -- a glorious sunny day with temps in the 70's -- was Queen Elizabeth's 83rd birthday. To celebrate, two gun salutes were held in London. The first was in Green Park, adjacent to Buckingham Palace. It began with a brief concert by a military marching band... video
then the horses trotted in, carrying soldiers and pulling the six cannons...

The soldiers set up for the salute The salute was loud and fantastic...

One of the cannons even made a perfect smoke ring After 41 shots were fired, the horses returned, gathered up all of the cannons and soldiers...

...and left just as quickly as they had arrived.

At the completion of this salute, and with a quick stop at Leicester Square to buy a discounted ticket to a late afternoon play, I made my way over to the Thames Wharf at the Tower of London just in time for the second gun salute. Even the Tower's Beefeater Guards were in their best dress uniforms...This salute replaced horses with jeeps and used just three cannons, but they fired an impressive 62 times.I made my way down to the wharf for a closer look and a different perspective...At the conclusion of the gun salute, the senior military men present marched to a spot just in front of me and stood at attention...As each jeep pulling a cannon departed, the military officer standing in the back saluted the senior officers... They were both very impressive shows. Happy Birthday to Her Majesty the Queen!
