Home for Christmas

We're back in the US for Christmas. It's wonderful to see everyone and to enjoy many of our long-standing Christmas traditions. We enjoyed the boys' visit with Santa over the weekend:On Sunday Mom & I went to Jim & Liz's for brunch, and loved seeing them and Ellen & Serge and the twins: as well as Jamie (and her kitties, Gracie and Mimi.

Jamie is lucky that they didn't go home with me, because I thought about stealing away with them! Last night, we had a special surprise at Steve & Maria's when our nephew's good friend Cowboy Joe stopped by to spread a little Christmas cheer. He brought his guitar with him, and we enjoyed a private holiday concert: Here is some fun video of the concert -- both Christmas carols:

and even a cowboy tune or two!

D and I hope that you are enjoying your holiday as much as we are enjoying ours!!

Fun Surprise

We love being able to read the hometown Washington Post when we are back in town. Yesterday morning's paper held an fun surprise when we saw this photo on the front page of the Metro Section:That's our friend Jack standing at the center, and John & Cathy seated at the table in the foreground. Looks like a fun party!

Weekend Visit from Don & Cathy

Don & Cathy were in London on business last week and came to spend some time with us over the weekend. We did married couple Christmas things; for example, Cathy and I went holiday shopping while D and Don drank beer and worked on fantasy football picks at the pub... We did reconnect, though, to take part in a very British Christmas tradition -- we attended a Christmas Pantomime. Pantomime (usually shortened to "panto") is a musical comedy theatre production done at Christmas in the UK (it's not "mime" that we think of in the US, where people act with no words, just body motions). British pantomime incorporates singing, dancing, slapstick, inside jokes, and lots of audience participation. (In fact, there were a lot of audience members there in costume.) There are a number of traditional story-lines, usually based on children's plays; we went to the Horsham Theatre's production of "Peter Pan". It was geared towards families, so it was a pretty tame production, but we had fun. They didn't exactly say it, but we're pretty sure that Don and Cathy will cross the English Channel from Brussels next year to do it again, but this time in costume. Hmmm...

Christmas season in London

Today we went into London for the day. Our first stop was Royal Albert Hall, where we watched a Masters tennis tournament. Royal Albert Hall is best known as an arts venue for concerts, ballet, and opera -- so seeing tennis in the hall was very different. The first match of the day was Pete Sampras vs. Cedric Pioline (Pioline won, to make it into the tournament finals tomorrow). The second match was doubles; Guy Forget & Mark Woodforde vs. Jamie Murray & Wayne Black (Forget/Woodforde won). Here is a view of the doubles match. As we were leaving the hall, we ran into Mark Woodforde signing autographs and posing for photos with fans. He seemed like a good guy. After tennis, we walked two blocks up to the Natural History Museum, where there is an outdoor ice rink and a small Christmas market. We skated for an hour and had a blast.

Christmas Party 2008

Last night was D's office Christmas party. (Not "holiday party". We get teased if we refer to this time of year as "the holidays" -- that's so American. Of course, in proper English, "holiday" means "vacation", therefore the "holiday season" is July/August. No political correctness here -- it's always "Merry Christmas", not "Happy Holidays".) The party was held nearby in a beautiful old manor house converted into a resort hotel & conference center. It was a 1920's-themed event, so there were a lot of gangster/flapper outfits. Andy's striped suit costume had a hoop in the middle, giving him that perfect rotund mobster profile, too!Chris was back in town and made it to the party. Here is is, at right, with D, Tanya, and Andy:We had a great time with our friends. Lots of dancing (awesome band this year), gambling (note all of the chips in front of Mike -- who knew he was a pro at blackjack?!), and general merriment:
