Portugal

We spent the long holiday weekend in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. We stayed with our friends Peter and Jane at their incredible villa near Vale do Lobo. The villa is grand, with lush gardens and incredible views to the Atlantic Ocean. Here I am picking a lemon from a tree in their garden:In my right hand is a banana that had just been picked from the banana tree you can see over my shoulder. Cool! Here is D, with Thelma, on one of Peter & Jane's many terraces:We explored much of the central Algarve area. The region is full of natural beauty, from the rolling hills... to the sea...The towns offer many colorful sights......and beautiful churches. This is the Church of San Lourenco, near Peter & Jane's villa:We listened to a very detailed description of the chapel's interior given by a tour guide; unfortunately, the tour guide was speaking in German to a tour group from Munich at the time, so I can't pass along a thing about it. (But I heard the words "blau" and "fliese" enough to deduce that they translate to "blue tiles"!)
The sidewalks in every town are made of elaborate tile mosaics. This is the fishing village of Olhao on a quiet Sunday afternoon: We enjoyed a fantastic Sunday meal on the beach with Jane and Peter:A good time was had by all!

Wow, awesome pictures. Looks like a nice trip. Jackie and I need to get some friends with a villa in Portugal. Are they looking for any new friends? We'd be happy to come visit:).

Hey A, great blog!! It was a pleasure to see you and D in the algarve, and maybe next time you can experience the beautiful, dusty, natural, green, sunbaked atmosphere down here (rather than cloudy, rainy, windy weather you actually got!)..can't write anymore right now due to too much guinness :o)

Hi Peter:
Thanks again for the fabulous weekend -- and take another look at those photos -- doesn't look too cloudy & rainy at all! (And FYI -- there's no such thing as "too much Guinness".)
