Steve, Maria, and the Boys Are Here for Spring Break... and Jason Made a Cameo Appearance!

We've spent the last week seeing Southeastern England through the eyes of our 6 & 9 year-old nephews...and it is quite a wonderland!

Steve, Maria and the boys arrived last Saturday night into Heathrow.
On Sunday, we drove to Stonehenge (or "Rockhenge", as little D calls it). It is always windy there, and it was particularly so on Sunday. Brrr!

Little D's front tooth finally came out on Sunday night, and we discovered that the England Tooth Fairy brings English coins! (Everyone is now wondering whether the English Easter Bunny brings English candy -- we are about to find out!)

On Monday, we took the kids to Legoland in Windsor, near the castle. This is a Lego-themed amusement park, combining awesome Lego-built characters and scenes with rides and other attractions. Because the children in England were in school that day (and the fact that it was about 45 degrees F), we pretty much had the place to ourselves.

On Tuesday, our cousin Jason arrived. Jason had been in Amsterdam, then Edinburgh, on business, but made a special detour through Horsham to spend a day with all of us. We hadn't all been together since July 4th 2006, so we had a lot of fun catching up. We walked all over Horsham, then drove to the Bluebell Railway depot in Sheffield Park to see the trains.

Little D had quite a long conversation with one of the train conductors about trains, world travel, and coin collecting. It seems that they had more in common than just the way they stand!

Jason left for home on Wednesday morning, and we headed to Devil's Dyke and then Beachy Head. It was another blustery day. At Beachy Head, the tide was much further out than we had ever seen it, which gave us the unique opportunity to walk far out beyond the cliffs towards the English Channel. Little D found a whale's tooth and a starfish!

On Thursday, we went to London. We saw --

The changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace:Train Platform 9 3/4 (from Harry Potter) at the King's Cross Train Station, where you can see that M (who is currently reading the 5th Harry Potter book!) and his trolley are nearly all the way through the brick wall:A rainy visit to the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels:
Steve, Maria and the kids also rode the London Eye, and we all enjoyed riding on the top of one of London's traditional double-decker buses. Friday included a visit to Arundel Castle, a stop at Chris & Laura's house in the country to see their son and play with their dog, then a dinner back at our house with Randy & Lisa's family (who have just arrived in London from Singapore and will be staying with us beginning on Tuesday.)

Today we are checking out Horsham's Easter Weekend Italian Market, then doing a pub walk. We'll also visit the horses that my nieces named "Chocolate" and "Star" when they were here last July.

If you'd like to see all of our photos from Steve & Maria's visit, click on the album below. I'll add to it as their visit continues.

It was great to see everyone last week. Thanks for having me.

Looks like everyone enjoyed the rest of their visit. Hopefully Jackie and I can make it back soon.
